Do Nena's '99 Red Balloons' song. Talk about historical meaning of the the song, how the balloons have been flying in the US and Canada (predicted Chinese spy balloons) and how this song predicts that. Then we analyzed the lines of the song for poetic devices.
Read in Sightlines 9, 'The Game' p 147 and answer number 1 and number 3
Watch 'Basketball or Nothing' episode 1 and 2 on Netflix to analyze First Nations goals, dreams, and future

Read 'The Open Window' aloud; this is a play. Watch video version of it after on Youtube. Discuss as we're reading it-- themes, characters, inferences.

Tues Jan 24--time to type edits from the rough draft and finish the good copy
Wed Jan 25/Thurs 26: Silent reading, finish up assignments, read poem 'The Execution' from Sightlines p 19 and discuss being accused of something you haven't done and then being executed. Read poem 'Color' about racism and discuss. Talk about Free Verse poems. Finish letter assignment for 'Lamb to Slaughter.'

Silent reading: Daily for 20 minutes, start of class, novel of your choice
Week 1: (Jan 17-20)
-Introductions, go over rules in class:
No phones, no ear buds or head phones, hoods down in class, bathroom break rules, silent reading each day, and most important--I want each student to succeed, so having plans for success
-Write very detailed, descriptive 'Intro Letter' assignment to me. I gave out this assignment in class. This letter will be your rough draft, and it must be typed. I will give time and computers to use in class. Once finished, you will print it and I will edit it with you and go over grammar details.
Read in class, 'A Lamb to Slaughter.' p. 10 Sightlines 9 Discuss plot, characters, inferring info, and setting. Assignment --questions and write a letter to Mary's sister. This is a creative letter that you make up where you re-tell what you've done, from Mary's point of view.
