Semester 2 2020
May 4-May 22:
Pick a character from the Outsiders script (one of the main characters only, so Ponyboy, Soda Pop, Cherry, Marcia, Darryl, Dally, Johnny, Two Bit). Pick a short passage or short scene and memorize the lines. Get a family member to read the other line parts or you could read all of the lines. (if you read all of the lines, change your tone/voice for each character to differentiate who is speaking.) Once you've rehearsed the lines several times and memorized them, record your scene and send me the video. Your scene should be at least 10 lines of your character speaking but can be more. You need to pick a scene or conversation that has a beginning and an end to it.
Drama/Music/Dance/Art/write Journal: Each day of the week, Monday to Friday, I want you to participate in something to do with Drama, music, dance, art or writing. You could listen to a favorite song, play an instrument, sing a song, dance by yourself (or with family), watch a show/movie and analyse some element of acting in it., draw or write, practice speaking in a different accent or dialect,... I want you to keep a record of what you do each day. It doesn’t have to be much—anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. You choose….but keep a journal. If you draw or paint, take a pic and send it to me. This is due once a week.
Include: Date, name, how long you did your activity (duration), description of your activity, factors. (SEE EXAMPLE BELOW FOR JOURNAL):
Example: April 16/20 dance 5 minutes, alone in bedroom. Danced to the song ‘Emotional Rescue,’ by the Rolling Stones. Glad nobody was watching—I lost myself in the music and danced in a pretty goofy way. I tried pretending I was Mick Jagger—fun!
Today's Homework

2 If we had been able to do this play, what character would you have wanted to do and why?
3 Write or video your response: Do a character analysis of your favorite character. You should include:
-what does he/she look like (hair, eyes, tall, short, old, young, etc)
-what does character like to do (hobbies, activities)
-how old is your character
-what does your character wear for clothes, footwear
-is your character kind, mean, happy, goofy, angry, mature, etc? describe him/her….
-what are a few actions that show who your character is (example: Ponyboy likes to write, shows he is thoughtful and cares about his schooling)
4 Is this story/play/movie still relevant in today’s society? Why or why not. Explain your reasons.

May 31- June 6: Any assignments not in are due.
June 7-12: Final marks and reports cards due. All work must be in.
Assignment 1 (April 16/20): Pick one of your favorite movies or shows. Even though you've seen it, I want you to watch it again. You will analyse your favorite character or characters in the movie. Tell me about your movie and why you like it so much. In particular, you are analysing the characters in great detail. I need lots of description. You can analyse the story, setting, meaning of your movie but I don’t simply want a summary. If you feel more comfortable talking about your movie, you can send me a recorded video of your analysis. Projected length is one page of writing or a couple of minutes of talking if you send me a video. No more than a 5 minute video discussion and if you decide to write more than one page, keep it to 1 ½ pages please.
Example for assignment 1: One of my favorite modern shows on Netflix’s is Atypical. I watched all of the episodes twice and I am eagerly awaiting the new season. The main character’s name is Sam and he has Autism. I like his character because I feel he plays an Autistic person very credibly. For example, when he is nervous, he uses a rubber band and fidgets with it to keep his mind occupied. He is socially awkward and he will hide when the societal pressures get to him. He is obsessed with Antarctica and he will talk about it and penguins all day long if you let him. I feel the writer did a lot of research into Autism and she wrote Sam’s character to be really realistic.
I like many of the characters in the show. I also really like Elsa the mom. She is a very Type A, over compensating mom who has lost herself. She has made her whole life about Sam and she doesn’t know who she is anymore. I can relate to her as I have seen women struggle to maintain their identities when they put family first. Sam’s sister, Casey, is a really strong, sassy teenager. She is a very realistic character and the way she portrays being Sam’s sister is very realistic. For example, she gets annoyed when is in her space, yet she is the first one to help him if he needs it. She is dating one of my other favorite characters, Evan. Casey goes through a coming of age moment when she realizes that she is bisexual and wants to be with her best girl friend. I like that all of the characters are not heterosexual and I feel Netflix tries to incorporate a broad spectrum of characters in its shows for diversity.
Finally, one of the funniest characters on the show is Zahid. He plays the part of a playboy but once you get past his façade he is very kind and caring towards Sam and tries to help Sam with being ‘atypical.’ He also represents cultural diversity as his cultural background is East Indian. And you couldn’t have a good teen series without romance. Sam’s girlfriend, Paige, is very high strung, has a nasty temper while driving, and finds it extremely challenging to go away to university, although it’s all she ever dreamed about. Paige sticks by Sam through everything and she really resonates with me because she is so loyal and caring.
The show has its dramas and conflicts and there is lots of emotional pain shown through character’s actions. Elsa had an affair so Doug, her husband, is struggling through most of the episodes to deal with his feelings after the affair is finished. When Casey falls in love with her best friend, she is breaking Evan’s heart but she is also breaking her own. She doesn’t know how she will be able to let go of Evan, as she still loves him.
All in all, the story line, characters and humor in Atypical leave me wanting to watch another season.

Weekly assignment journal: Do This for week of April 16-20

As you know, school is closed for the rest of the year. For Drama 10-12, we will be covering the essential learning outcomes through electronic education. If there are any issues with internet or digital devices in your household, please let me know right away.
What learning platforms will be used for the rest of the year?
I will be using my website and my email. I will post assignments weekly and I ask that you submit them to me via email. I will be asking for written assignments and also some video assignments, which can be done using your phones. I may try to connect everybody with Zoom but that largely depends on if the group is available for a meeting.

4 Aesthetic experiences have the power to transform our perspective. Can effect change in the actor/audience/environment.
5 Drama provides opportunities for creativity, innovation, and collaboration. Drama encourages critical reflection, creative co-operation, and exchange of ideas.
Curricular Competencies:
1 Explore and Create--explore and create dramatic works to express ideas, meaning and emotions. Create, rehearse and refine through individual presentation (due to pandemic) or through virtual online performance collaboratively. Improvise, use props, practice performance skills, experiment with technology for dramatic purpose
2 Reason and Reflect -describe, analyse and respond to dramatic works, including own. Apply feedback and make connections with personal experiences. Examine influences of social, cultural, historical, and personal contexts on dramatic works

Assessment and Feedback:
Students will submit their assignments weekly and email them to me by the following Monday. That gives students all week to work on their assignments and the weekend if they need it. Students will be responding to Dramatic works, such as movies, t.v. shows, internet, social media, podcasts, written plays, filmed plays or radio plays. Students will have some creative assignments where they are asked to perform a piece. Assessment will be based on assignments and projects being submitted for grading. I will give feedback on assignments as they are submitted via email.

April 16-24: Assignment 1 and 2 (1 Favorite movie/show and 2 Drama journal for the week)
April 26-May 2: Assignments 3 and 4 --
May 3- May 9: Assignments 5 and 6 ---
May 10-16: Assignments 7 and 8 ---
May 17-23: Assignments 9 and 10---
May 24-30: Assignments 11 and 12--
May 31- June 6: Any assignments not in are due.
Paige sticks by Sam through everything and she really resonates with me because she is so loyal and caring.

Communication and internet access:
I have communicated with everybody via email and/or phone. If you do not have internet or technology access, you need to make arrangements with me for paper copies of assignments. As of right now, I’m unsure what the Yukon Department of Education will mandate for giving out paper assignments, so we are in waiting mode.
I will be sending out assignments at the beginning of every week. I will be in communication once work is submitted.
